Tuesday, April 25th

We went over the format for the test on King Lear scheduled for Friday, May 5th.  We also went over the criteria for the scene performance scheduled for May 11th.

We read and discussed IV.i.-IV.vi.41 today.  Next class, we will be having a Shakespeare workshop by the people from Bard on the Beach.  We shall finish off the play on Monday, do a review on Wednesday, and write the test on Friday.

Thursday, April 20th

We continued reading, viewing and discussing to the end of Act III today.  We also went over the criteria for the scene you will be performing from this play.  We will be having a workshop from the people at Bard on the Beach  next Thursday to help you along with your scene.  We shall start Act IV next class.

Tuesday, April 18th

We continued to work through III.i.- iii. with the commentaries from the assigned people.  We then worked on the DIAMANTE on one of the characters in the play.  Each line of the poem should be supported with quotations from Act I-III.iii. demonstrating these qualities in the character.  This is due next class, Thursday, April 20th.

Wednesday, April 12th

We worked through to the end of Act II today with designated people commenting on the key passages.  At the end of class, we went over what  a diamante is.  We will be writing one in class on Wednesday, April 19th.  Consider which of the characters in the play would make a worthy subject for your diamante.

Monday, April 10th

We continued working our way through Act II today.

Each person was given a different passage from II.i.-III.iii..  Find the passage and figure out:

  1.  who is speaking to whom?
  2. what is being said?
  3. why is it said?  what is the context?
  4. how is it said?  what effect is created through the use of language (connotations, devices…)   10 marks
  5. what is the purpose of this passage?  (to advance the plot, to reveal character, to create atmosphere? to establish theme?…)   3 marks

As we read through the upcoming scenes, YOU will explain your passage aloud as we come to it.  The class agreed that this would be worth 20 marks.

We got up to II.iv.45 and will pick up from this point next class.

Thursday, April 6th

We continued working on the Act One assignment for the first 45 minutes of class.  If you were away today, you can do this at lunch Monday or Wednesday of next week.

Friday, March 31st

We continued working through King Lear,  this time with a video, getting from I.i.283 to I.iv. 171.  We shall finish the act and work on the corresponding assignment next class.

Wednesday, March 29th

We went over some examples of the “flattery exercise” and then continued the play with Goneril and Regan’s flattery speeches.  We are currently at I.i.283 and shall continue with Act One next class.

Monday, March 27th

We started King Lear today with a discussion about birth order, labelling, favoritism, and dysfunctional family dynamics as we met the characters in the dramatis personae.  We read and discussed I.i.1-55.  We also wrote a “flattery exercise” so that we can identify with Goneril, Regan, and Cordelia.  We shall continue with this next class.
